Embroidery vs print vs DTF: which logo method suits your workwear?

Updated · Workwear Global

Choose embroidery for polos, fleeces, jackets and caps where you want a premium, hard-wearing finish; choose DTF transfers for full-colour or highly detailed logos on t-shirts, hi-vis and technical fabrics. Screen print is most economical for large runs of a simple, few-colour design.

How each method works

  • Embroidery stitches your logo into the fabric with polyester or rayon thread. The design is first converted into a stitch file (digitising).
  • DTF (direct-to-film) prints your full-colour design onto a film, coats it with adhesive powder and heat-presses it onto the garment.
  • Screen print pushes ink through a mesh stencil, one screen per colour, directly onto the garment.

Which should you choose?

For customer-facing teams in polos and jackets, embroidery gives the most professional, long-lasting result. For hi-vis vests and jackets, a heat-applied transfer such as DTF is normally preferred because stitching perforates the reflective and waterproof layers.

If your logo has gradients, photographs or very fine lines, DTF reproduces it faithfully. If you are ordering hundreds of identical t-shirts with a one- or two-colour design, ask about screen print.

Common questions

Can you embroider hi-vis?
It is possible on some garments, but heat transfers are usually recommended because embroidery punctures the fabric and can affect waterproofing and the reflective area.
Will DTF crack or peel?
A correctly applied DTF transfer is flexible and wash-durable. Wash inside out at the temperature on the garment label and avoid ironing directly on the print.
What artwork do I need?
A vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) is ideal for all methods. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background also works for DTF.
